Sonya Paterson discusses growth

Immediately after the last election I began regularly attending Council meetings, public hearings, public forums and standing before council to voice my concern on numerous issues including Mufford Crescent overpass, Parklane development in Fort Langley, Athenry Gate in Yorkson (traffic congestion on 83rd and 208th), Routley Land Swap,Say No to 208 St. Truck Route and the Hopington Aquifer and east Langley water line route and others.

Staying connected with citizens throughout our community and maintaining a consistent dialogue with them is important to me. Through my conversations with people throughout Langley I've heard, “Council does not listen to us, they are not working for the very people who elected them”

Too often I've witnessed citizens speaking before Council stating they were not aware of the public hearing and the changes being proposed for their neighbourhood until it was too late.

Over the last three years numerous development projects and transportation issues have been approved by Council even though citizens speaking against the issues far outnumbered those in support.

Council meetings have been filled with rezoning applications and the approval of these applications has greatly altered our neighbourhood plans, severely increased density and is putting a burden on our roads, schools and even our hospital.

Finding a workable solution to meet the needs of the developers by improving the community consultation process is something we need to do in the area's where change is occuring so rapidly.

Another issue that suggests change is needed comes from my observations of citizens asking for community improvements in new neighbourhoods such as sidewalks, bike paths, small pocket parks, off leash dog parks, traffic calming etc. To me this means we need to listen and review our process for securing more benefits from developers as other municipalities are doing successfully.

Development projects, transportation matters, land fill issues etc. are being approved by Council even though citizens speaking against the issues far out numbered those in support. This is creating a lot of frustration throughout Langley.

Council has not done a good job of listening to the citizens who elected them.

  Sonya Paterson's Vision for Langley

  Communities   Healthier Community Plans

Langley citizens need greater transparency in what Government does.

Improve the consultation process early to be more inclusive of citizens.

Protection of farmland.

Maintaining Langley’s natural heritage.

The promotion of Langley Tourism.

Encourage the development of healthier community plans to be more friendly, including small parks and connecting transit

Community neighborhood plans that enable citizens of all ages to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Developing child and family friendly community plans to include more walking sidewalks and walking trails, bicycle paths and where needed equestrian trails.

We need more designated off leash opportunities for dogs and their owners.

Encourage the protection of our rivers and environment

Fiscal Responsibility   Public Safety and Protection
Maintain a rainy day fund in case of an emergency. .

Better planning of communities to maintain taxes within families budgets; putting families first so Langley can thrive

Listening to the Langley citizens about keeping taxes in line with the cost of living.

Budget within our means

Working with community partners to identify solutions to address crime, drug abuse, and homelessness

Working with community organizations to increase support for community programs

Support those who provide valued services of community safety, protection of life, property and the environment.

Transport and Land-use planning

Let’s look at building communities where citizens can feel safe and travel without being dependent on automobiles

We need a long term master transportation plan

We need an effective community consultation process to review future overpasses

My Commitment is to Seek Improved Transit and Transportation Opportunities for Langley

Transit and Transportation has long been as issue for citizens of Langley and I believe...

We must continue to do all we can to receive our fair share of transportation infrustructure dollars.

We need to improve transit and transportation opportunities for Langley

We must insist Langley receive its fare share of efficient, affordable and sustainable transit and transportation

Expanded bus service for Langley. One of the greatest challenges facing residents in Langley, particularly Aldergrove is the lack of efficient public transit options.

We need to continue to advocate all levels of government for economical efficient light rail passenger service. Trans Link has estimated the cost of light rail at $27 million per kilometer versus $127 million per kilometer for the Evergreen Line and $233 million for the UBC / Broadway Line. The old Interurban corridor exists and is owned by BC Hydro and remains a viable solution.
I believe we must remain open minded about the route and continue to engage the public in this decision making process.

Why a community rail service for Langley because it benefits not only our citizens, our students and seniors, but also our economy. Also developers are ready to build around effective community rail transit centre's.

Relocation of Delta Port heavy rail traffic. T
he Roberts Bank Rail Corridor Agreement signing a few years ago guarentees that heavy rail traffic will increase from 18 trains to 35 trains a day.  We must encourage all levels of government to replace the 100 year old New Westminster Rail Bridge. We need a NEW bridge of increased capacity to allow the Delta port heavy rail to be routed over the river and NOT through the Langley's.
